As a young boy I remember going coon-hunting with my dad and his brothers. This always took place in the evening. They always had a dog or two to track down the raccoons. The dogs would find the raccoons and chase them up a tree. With carbide lights the hunters would spot them and shoot them down. They were then skinned and the pelts were put to dry and cured by nailing them to the outside barn walls. They were sold to buyers who came around looking for pelts. My dad would also hunt rabbits and squirrels.
